Born on July 6, 1901, in Calcutta, Dr. Mukherjee was influenced by his father, Sir Ashutosh Mukherjee, a notable educationist. After earning degrees from Calcutta University and Lincoln’s Inn in London, he became the youngest Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University at 33 but soon entered politics. Initially associated with the Indian National Congress, he later joined the Hindu Mahasabha and eventually founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951, advocating for nationalism, cultural integrity, and economic self-reliance.
In the Constituent Assembly, he contributed significantly to India’s constitution, advocating for a robust and inclusive framework. He supported Hindi as a national language for unity and addressed issues like the Hindu Code Bill, balancing reform with cultural preservation. Dr. Mukherjee opposed Article 370, advocating for Kashmir’s full integration into India, which led to his arrest and death in 1953 during a protest.
His views on international relations emphasized strategic autonomy and a balanced foreign policy. Dr. Mukherjee’s firm stance on India-Pakistan relations underscored national integrity and security.

The Author
Prof. (Dr.) Tapan Kumar Shandilya, presently the Vice-Chancellor of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee University, Ranchi (Jharkhand) is a dynamic personality with multi-faceted experience in academics and administration. Dr. Shandilya’s profile has a stint of over 30 years of academic experience. Prior to joining DSPMU, he also served as the Vice-Chancellor of Nalanda Open University, Patna, as well as Veer Kunwar Singh University, Ara, Bihar. He was also the Professor of Economics cum the Principal of College of Commerce, Arts & Science under Patliputra University, Patna. His dedication and commitment towards his work is unparalleled. Having a prolific teaching experience of more than thirty years, he has mentored several research scholars as supervisors culminating into the award of Ph.D. degree. He has published more than 100 research papers in journals of repute and has also authored many books which are available on the digital platforms. Besides this Dr. Shandilya was a former President of Indian Economic Association and is presently the President of Commerce & Management Association (CMA) and Bihar Economic Association. Dr. Shandilya was adorned with Life Time Achievement Award 2022 by His Excellency Governor of Jharkhand in the annual conference of Indian Economic Association. Dr. Shandilya is a proud winner of “Pride of Asia Award”. This award was conferred to Dr. Shandilya in Asian Leaders Conference, Bhutan on 22 June 2018.
