    The Book

In India, Shops and Commercial Establishments play a pivotal role in the economic development of all the States. This is because of the fact that they provide sizeable revenue to the exchequer and employment to thousands of employees especially women folk. However, most of the women employees live in miserable conditions. The shops and establishments pay very low salary, which is often difficult to meet the needs of the family. In most cases, the women employees experience the pathetic issues of over work load; lack of toilet facilities, good drinking water, rest room and lunch room. Even in some shops, especially textiles, employees are not allowed to sit during working hours. These conditions make them vulnerable to health problems and stress. Though the Shops and Commercial Establishment Act was amended to protect these employees, implementation of the same is lax and the poor employees continue to suffer. Besides, these employees have to suffer a lot of difficulties on family front, especially when they are unable to fulfill all the household responsibilities due to lack of time. As a result, they encounter family disturbances, leading to imbalance in work and life and thereby dissatisfaction.

The women employees of shops and establishments are the poor people in the society. Their life is miserable. There is no improvement in their work life or personal life. Their socio-economic background is still pathetic. They have high workload at their work place and they work more than eight hours a day without any rest or lunch time, leading to imbalance in work life and thereby dissatisfaction. In this background, the authors have made an attempt to investigate the problems of these hapless women employees of Shops and Commercial Establishments in India with special reference to Kerala.

The book comprises ten chapters including an introduction and summing up. It is hoped that the book will be useful to entrepreneurs and employees of shops and Commercial establishments, policy makers, academicians and researchers in Commerce, Management & other social sciences and other stakeholders.
